    The NHS Long Term Plan is a new plan for the NHS to improve the quality of patient care
    and health outcomes. At Healthwatch Barnsley we wanted to ensure that residents were able to have their say on the plan. We reached different sections of our community both geographically and by reaching out to communities who are seldom heard and we did this in a number of different ways..

    We began looking into CAMHS in 2014. Through our outreach and engagement work in the local community, we had picked up a number of comments and case studies about access to the service and long waits. We had also received some case studies (patient stories) that highlighted that there were problems with the CAMH service which was impacting upon individual’s experiences.

    Healthwatch Barnsley held the BSL Users Healthy Day in partnership with the DEAForum, Leeds Involving People, and Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council (BMBC).

    Following on from discussions with the Commissioners Working Together team, it was agreed that local conversations with local communities would be an ideal approach to gathering more information about perceptions of and feelings towards the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Sustainability and Transformation Plan.

    To support the CQC #Declare Your Care Initiative, we spoke to adults with a learning disability and/or their carers to gain an understanding of their experience of receiving health and social care services.

    Improving oral health has been outlined as a priority area for Public Health in Barnsley and the Local Authority is now responsible for oral health promotion, Public Health chose this as a priority area within their 2016 strategy. We engaged with five primary schools in Barnsley gathering the views of young people relating to dentists.

    Working with the Dearne Approach Healthwatch Barnsley agreed to explore the issues relating to DNA’s with service users and General Practices across the Dearne. We also agreed to raise awareness about the importance of keeping appointments or cancelling appointments where necessary.

    We received feedback asking us to focus on the Speech and Language Therapy Service (SALT) for children and young people within Barnsley. When we contacted the service commissioner we were advised that the service was currently under review and that this piece of work could be included within the review

    underfunded and stretched beyond their capacity.
