Hygiene Poverty Update On Barnsley residents across the Borough

During Hygiene Poverty Awareness Week in October 2023, we spoke to Barnsley people about what hygiene poverty meant to them, their hygiene needs and if they were finding it difficult to buy hygiene products

Our Hygiene Poverty Update follows on from our initial report that was published in May 2023. We carried out the same survey during October 2023 to see if anything had changed for our Barnsley residents.

We discovered that the cost of living crisis is continuing to affect our communities and we saw a significant drop in the number of people who previously told us they had “enough money for basic necessities and a little left over for leisure or saving”

These people are now saying they “have just enough money for basic necessities and little left over for anything else”

There has also been a rise in the number of people who say that their physical and mental health have been affected by the cost of living increase and a concerning rise in the number of people who told us they are avoiding visits to the dentist as part of their cost cutting.
