Annual GP Patient Survey

NHS England has published the results from their annual GP patient survey. See how yours is doing or compare practices.

The GP patient survey covers GP practice services and asks about your last contact, your last appointment and overall experience. The survey questionnaire also includes questions about when your GP practice is closed, your health and pharmacy and NHS dentistry services.

The results of the survey are published on behalf of NHS England on the GP Patient Survey website.

General local highlights

Just over three quarters of patients (76%) across South Yorkshire reported a good overall experience of GP practices.

More than 9/10 (91%) of the people who completed the survey felt their needs were met at their last appointment and 91% also felt that they were involved as much as they wanted to be in discussions about their care and treatment.

93% of the people in South Yorkshire who completed the survey had confidence and trust in the healthcare professional they spoke to.

Interestingly, people in South Yorkshire seem to prefer using traditional methods of booking appointments, with 75% phoning their GP practice and 14% visited their GP practice in person.  Only 6% used their GP's website and even less used the NHS app (3%).

However, we noted some worrying trends from the survey for South Yorkshire:

  • Of those who booked over the telephone, 77% of people across South Yorkshire were held in a queue and 5% didn't get their call answered.
  • 41% of people across South Yorkshire found contacting their GP practice on the telephone difficult.
  • 40% of people across South Yorkshire found contacting their GP practice on their website difficult.
  • 39% of people across South Yorkshire found contacting their GP practice on the NHS app difficult.
  • 52% of people across South Yorkshire weren't offered an appointment the same or next day, with 33% feeling that they had to wait too long for their appointment.

Pharmacy and dental care

Local pharmacy highlights:

  • 87% of people across South Yorkshire described their experience of using pharmacy services as good.

Local dentistry highlights:

  • 20% of people across South Yorkshire have never tried to book an NHS dental appointment because they didn't think they could get one.
  • Of those who tried to book an NHS dental appointment, 83% were able to get one.
  • 75% of people across South Yorkshire described their experience of using NHS dental services as good.

Staff at NHS England will use the results to understand what’s working and what needs to improve.

The survey was carried out securely and information published did not identify individuals, nor will it affect their care.

The answers will help the NHS to improve local health services for people like you and your family.
